I use CanoScan 8800F but i downloaded vuescan software -it seems to have more options than the software you get with the scanner but it's still extremely user friendly so I don't have to edit my photos later in photoshop which is a big +īefore i scan medium format film i put the negatives under a big pile of heavy books (for about a day) and they are perfectly flat and ready to be scanned! Though it might cause Newton rings again. Maybe if I could find a transparent piece of hard plastic I could place it under the actual film, in the holder. But since the film is still curly I moved the black card further, so it's right next to the photo I want to scan. The top end should be pushed right up to keep it flat. No, not next to the photo but under the "open" end. Ok, so colour scans need some saturation, I'll remember that.Īnd all extras turned off, also sharpening? So you just place the black piece of plastic under the film, next to the photo you want to scan? Even then, the film is still a bit curled for me most of the time i just remove some dust spots and thats it. most of the time some contrast and wb correction too.ī/w scans are often fine the way they are. color scans always need some push in saturation. I use the canon sofatware in arcsoft and scan as 48bit tif or 16bit for b/w. In fact, most of the time with b/w I don't need to do anything. The Canon scans less saturated than the equivalent Epson, but using the Arc software with all extras turned off you can get a great scan that only requires a little retouching to match the neg. Given that I'm using a v old camera with a poor lens, the results aren't too bad. Some films scan differently, for example Fuji 100 was perfect but my Fuji 400 scans a bit green.īasically, I scan it in a bit flat and then use photoshop, not scanner software, to sort it out. I sort the white balance out in photoshop. I just use the scanning software that came with it and integrates with photoshop. I tried placing the film directly on the glass but that sometimes causes Newton rings and somehow affects the colour as well. I've been scanning some medium format film, but the colours seem a bit dull in Arcsoft Photostudio, while they're oversaturated and very dark in Silverfast when I use the Negafix settings for the used film.Īlso the medium format film holders that came with the CanoScan 8800F aren't easy to use, the film often is bended or comes loose.
